| 520$a | Summary, etc. | 69 | 0.01% | 68 | Political commentary and attacks on 'The Observator', in the form of satiric dialogues. (1)|In 1725 a Glasgow mob, incensed at the imposition of a malt tax in Scotland, rioted and destroyed the property of Daniel Campbell (d. 1753), the prominent merchant and politician. Campbell subsequently arranged to have the local Glasgow beer and ale tax (of twopence Scots per pint) diverted to repay him a total of RĐ6080 for his losses. The city here protests that it should not itself be liable for the repayment, as their own expenses in maintaining the city were so great, and the local representatives tried hard to prevent the rioters sacking Campbell's premises. In the event it seems that Campbell was handsomely compensated, but that shortly afterwards left Glasgow and bought the island of Islay.
